These golden slices of homemade plantain chips goodness are perfect for satisfying your snack cravings, and they’re healthier than many store-bought chips. These easy-to-make plantain chips are a gluten-free snack, ideal for those with celiac disease.
I like to make this easy plantain chips recipe by frying. However, you can bake it in the oven or use an air fryer. Using the oven for baked plantain chips, gently line them up on parchment paper. Place on a baking sheet, and spray some oil on the plantains.
This snack is a favorite in my home and I make it for the kids to take to school. My mom also made the same for me to take to school and I create the same for my kids.
The crispy plantains are addictive if you fry them right.
Follow this simple recipe to make your plantain chips at home!
Ingredients:
– 2-3 green or slightly yellow plantains
– 1-2 cups vegetable oil or olive oil (for frying)
– Salt (to taste)
– Optional: spices such as paprika, garlic powder, or cayenne pepper
Equipment:
– Sharp knife or mandoline slicer
– Frying pan or deep fryer
– Slotted spoon or tongs
– Paper towels
– Mixing bowl
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Plantains:
– Peel the plantains by cutting off both ends. I like to make about 4 shallow lengthwise slits through the skin. Use your fingers to pry off the peel.
– Slice the plantains into thin, even rounds or diagonal slices for a more decorative look. A mandoline slicer can help achieve uniform thickness.
2. Heat the Oil:
– Pour the vegetable oil into a frying pan or deep fryer, filling it to about 1-2 inches deep. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test if the oil is ready by dropping a small piece of plantain into the oil; it should sizzle immediately.
3. Fry the Plantain Slices:
– Gently drop your spiraled or sliced plantain into the hot oil. Fry in batches if necessary so as not to overcrowd the pan.
– Fry the slices until they turn golden brown and crispy. This took me about 2-3 minutes. Use a slotted spoon or tongs to flip the slices halfway through.
4. Drain and Season:
– Remove the fried plantain chips from the oil using a slotted spoon. I prefer to use a frying basket, to shake off excess oil. Place crispy plantain chips on a plate lined with paper towels and allow to cool.
– While the chips are still warm, sprinkle them with salt and any other desired spices. Toss gently to ensure an even coating.
5. Cool and Serve:
– Allow the plantain chips to cool completely before serving. This helps them become extra crispy.
Tips for Perfect Homemade Plantain Chips
Choose the Right Plantains:
Green plantains yield starchy and crispy chips, similar to potato chips. Slightly yellow plantains will be a bit sweeter and softer.
Uniform Slices:
Ensure that the slices are of even thickness for uniform cooking. Thin slices will be crispier.
Fry plantains on medium heat
Using medium heat ensures the homemade plantain chips fry uniformly. You can fry your plantain chips with olive oil for a healthier option.
Spice It Up:
Get creative with your seasonings. In addition to salt, try adding a sprinkle of paprika, garlic powder, or even a pinch of cayenne pepper for a spicy kick.
Storage:
Store your plantain chips in an airtight container at room temperature. They can stay fresh and crispy for up to a week. You can also zip bags to store them.
Enjoy your homemade plantain chips as a snack on their own, or pair them with your favorite dips and salsas. They also make a great accompaniment to sandwiches and soups.
