The most memorable getaways often begin with the simplest decision—choosing the road less travelled, just beyond your doorstep.”

After months of busy schedules and endless to-do lists, my family and I needed a proper weekend getaway. We set our sights on a weekend getaway to Abrantes, a charming town in central Portugal. This destination promised the perfect blend of relaxation, culture, and culinary delights.

What we discovered exceeded our expectations. The weekend reminded us why Portugal continues to surprise and enchant us. Even after 17 years of calling this beautiful country home, we’re still finding hidden gems.

Our Home Away from Home: Lunar Hotel Turismo

Our Abrantes weekend getaway began with checking into Lunar Hotel Turismo, a four-star gem that immediately set the tone for our relaxing escape. From the moment we walked into our room, I knew we’d made the right choice. The space was impeccably clean, thoughtfully designed, and most importantly, incredibly comfortable after our long drive from Cascais.

The hotel’s attention to detail didn’t go unnoticed – from the quality linens to the peaceful atmosphere that enveloped the entire property. It’s exactly the kind of place where you can truly unwind and forget about the outside world.

First Taste of Abrantes : La Vai Alho Restaurant

After settling in, we ventured into the city center to explore. We decided to satisfy our appetites at La Vai Alho, a local restaurant that had caught our attention.

The evening exceeded our expectations. The food was delicious and the hospitality was warm. The atmosphere made dining out feel like a celebration rather than just a meal. It was exactly what we hoped for after our drive from Cascais.

There’s something magical about discovering a new restaurant in an unfamiliar town. First, there’s the anticipation building as you approach something new. Then comes the first bite, that crucial moment of discovery. Finally, there’s the realization that you’ve stumbled upon something truly special. Ultimately, it’s these magical moments that make travel so rewarding. In fact, these experiences remind us why we seek authentic adventures beyond our comfort zones.

A Weekend of Cultural and Culinary Adventures

Day Two: Convento de Cristo in Tomar

Our first major adventure took us to the magnificent Convento de Cristo in Tomar. This UNESCO World Heritage site is nothing short of breathtaking, with its intricate architecture and rich history spanning centuries. As we walked through these ancient halls, you can’t help but feel connected to the generations who came before us.

The convent’s unique blend of architectural styles – from Romanesque to Gothic to Renaissance – tells the story of Portugal’s evolution through the ages. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down, breathe deeply, and appreciate the incredible craftsmanship of our ancestors. Ultimately, this cultural immersion is exactly what makes an Abrantes weekend getaway so enriching.

Olive Oil Tour and Wine Tasting at Casa da Anadia

Facade of Casa da Anadia

Next, we indulged in what turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences of our weekend – our visit to Casa da Anadia. What began as an olive oil tour and wine tasting evolved into something much more magical and comprehensive.

As someone who’s passionate about cooking and understanding where our ingredients come from, learning about the olive oil production process was absolutely fascinating. From tree to bottle, every step revealed the dedication and craftsmanship that goes into creating this liquid gold. Moreover, this artisanal process shows why olive oil is so essential to Portuguese cuisine. Additionally, witnessing the traditional methods firsthand gave us a deeper appreciation for this culinary staple.

But Casa da Anadia offered so much more than we expected. We had the delightful opportunity to feed the donkeys apples – an experience that brought out the child in all of us and created some of the weekend’s most joyful moments. There’s something incredibly grounding about connecting with animals in such a peaceful, rural setting.

The property also houses a beautiful chapel, where we took a moment to appreciate the spiritual heritage that’s so deeply woven into Portugal’s countryside. The quiet reverence of the space provided a perfect contrast to the more active parts of our visit.

We also explored the castle on the grounds, which added a wonderful historical dimension to our experience. Walking through these ancient stones, you can almost hear the echoes of centuries past.

What made this experience truly special was learning about the family business that has existed for generations. There’s something profoundly moving about witnessing the continuation of traditions, the passing down of knowledge from one generation to the next, and the deep respect for the land that sustains these family enterprises.

The olive oil tasting that followed was the perfect complement to our olive oil education, showcasing the incredible diversity of flavors that this region has to offer. Even better was the wine tasting. Each sip told a story of terroir, tradition, and the passionate dedication of the family behind it all.

A Scenic Drive Through Entroncamento

Sometimes the journey is just as important as the destination. Our drive through Entroncamento provided beautiful scenery and those peaceful moments of connection that only a family road trip can offer. These are the times when the best conversations happen, when you’re simply enjoying each other’s company without the distractions of daily life.

Morning Luxury: A Breakfast Fit for a King

I have to dedicate a special mention to the breakfast at Lunar Hotels – it was spectacular. The spread was generous, the quality exceptional, and the presentation beautiful. It’s the kind of breakfast that makes you want to wake up early just to savor every moment of your Abrantes weekend getaway.

The hotel also boasts an amazing swimming pool that looked incredibly inviting. Unfortunately, the windy weather and high pollen count kept us from taking a dip, but it’s definitely something to look forward to on our next visit during calmer weather.

Why This Weekend Mattered

In our busy lives, it’s easy to forget the importance of simply being present with the people we love. This weekend in Abrantes reminded us that some of the best adventures are waiting just a short drive away from home. We don’t always need to travel far to create meaningful memories.

Portugal continues to surprise me with its hidden gems, warm hospitality, and incredible diversity. Whether you’re looking for cultural enrichment, culinary adventures, or simply a peaceful retreat, central Portugal offers it all.
