Our First Family Trip to Los Angeles: A Memorable Journey from Las Vegas

Family trips are an incredible way to bond, create lasting memories, and explore new places together.

Our recent family road trip from Las Vegas to Los Angeles was an adventure we won’t soon forget. With the heatwave in Las Vegas which hit highs of 54ºc, we decided to escape for a few days to Los Angeles. Browsing the web for a family-friendly hotel, we found Hyatt House LA – University Medical Centre. It was affordable and we decided to lodge there.

Family trips are a wonderful way to strengthen bonds, create lasting memories, and explore new places together. They provide opportunities for family members to spend quality time, engage in shared activities, and experience different cultures and environments. Whether it’s a short weekend getaway or an extended vacation, family trips can enhance relationships and offer valuable experiences for everyone involved.

Driving through LA

As we packed up the car and set off, the kids buzzed with excitement, and so did we—though we knew the drive could be a bit challenging. Despite encountering some traffic on the highway and within the city, we made the journey in about five hours, eagerly anticipating the sights and experiences that awaited us in LA.

Staying at the Hyatt House Hotel in South LA

Upon arriving in Los Angeles, we checked into the Hyatt House Hotel in South LA, our home base for the next two nights. The hotel was a great choice, especially for a family like ours. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, but the real highlight for the kids was the swimming pool. After the long drive, they couldn’t wait to jump in and splash around, and we were more than happy to let them burn off some energy. The pool became our little oasis during the stay, providing a perfect way to unwind and keep the kids entertained. The hotel offered complimentary breakfast from 6 am – 9 am. It wasn’t easy to have the kids wake up that early so they missed breakfast quite often.

Exploring the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Our first full day in Los Angeles began with a visit to the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame. Walking along the famous sidewalk, we spotted the stars of celebrities we love, and the kids were thrilled to see the names of their favourite movie stars, musicians and so, was I. The atmosphere was vibrant, with street performers and fellow tourists all around. It felt surreal to be standing where so many legends have been honoured over the years. As we walked down the Sunset Blvd, we found a Chipotle restaurant and had lunch there.

Discovering the Griffith Observatory

Discovering the Griffith Observatory

After soaking in the Hollywood vibes, we headed to the Griffith Observatory, a place that offered both education and stunning views. The observatory sits atop a hill, providing breathtaking panoramic views of Los Angeles, including the famous Hollywood Sign.

Inside, we explored the exhibits on space and astronomy, which fascinated the whole family. The kids were particularly intrigued by the interactive displays, and we all enjoyed peering through the telescopes. The blend of science and spectacular scenery made it a highlight of our trip.

The Griffith Observatory also has a cafeteria for a quick meal. It was the ideal place since the visit to the museum is free. There was also a lot of paid parking down the hill which charges $10 per hour.

The La Brea Tar Pits: A Journey into Prehistory

On our second day, we ventured to the La Brea Tar Pits, a unique museum that took us back in time to the prehistoric era. The museum’s exhibits, filled with fossils of ancient creatures like mammoths and saber-toothed cats, captured the imaginations of our kids. They were amazed by the stories of how these animals became trapped in the tar pits thousands of years ago. It was a fun and educational experience that sparked countless questions and discussions as we walked through the exhibits. Also, there were staff strategically placed to answer questions and explain about each exhibition. It was also amazing to see some of the designated staff cleaning excavated fossils.

At the end of the visit to the museum, we visited the gift shop and got some souvenirs for lasting memories.

Relaxing at Santa Monica Beach

As a Portuguese family, we always love to visit beaches and water. No family trip from Las Vegas to Los Angeles would be complete without a visit to the beach, so after the visit to Tar Pits, we drove over to Santa Monica. The beach was the perfect place to relax after a day of exploring. The kids played in the sand while we enjoyed the sea breeze and the lively atmosphere of the pier. We also had a delicious lunch at one of the beachfront restaurants named Bubba Gump Shrimp Co, enjoying fresh seafood with a view of the Pacific Ocean. After lunch, the restaurant offered us one of their signature glass tumblers for buying a draft beer during lunch. We then walked around the pier to appreciate the beauty of the calm Pacific Ocean. The laid-back vibe of Santa Monica was the perfect way to unwind before heading back to the hotel.

Reflecting on Our LA Adventure

As our short but sweet family trip from Las Vegas to Los Angeles came to an end, we couldn’t help but reflect on the wonderful memories we’d created in Los Angeles. From the glitz of Hollywood to the educational fun at Griffith Observatory and the La Brea Tar Pits, every moment was filled with excitement and discovery. Even the traffic and the busy city streets couldn’t dampen our spirits. We left LA with a sense of accomplishment, having explored some of the city’s most famous attractions, and more importantly, having shared these experiences as a family.

Our first family trip to Los Angeles was a success, and we’re already looking forward to our next adventure. Whether it’s another road trip or a new destination, the joy of exploring new places together is something we cherish. Until then, the memories of our LA journey will keep us smiling for a long time to come.
