Malaga beckons travellers with its rich history, vibrant culture, and sun-kissed beaches along the sparkling shores of the Costa del Sol. Being the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, makes it the perfect holiday spot with a group of friends.
In this interesting post, I will share the 8 best things to visit in Malaga this summer holidays in Spain.
In Malaga, every cobblestone street holds stories of ancient civilizations and artistic legacies. Join me and discover the wonders hidden within this city. My journey to explore the treasures of this magical city would be incomplete without stopping at Seville.
In summer 2022, life is returning to normal. I decided to begin my vacation by returning to the South of Spain. This region, also known as Andalusia, is famous for its beautiful beaches, delicious food, and sunny weather.
Back in 2016, I visited Seville and it was an amazing time. The kids and I had lots of fun, especially at ISLA MAGICA, a theme fun park. We also explored the city by touring in the hop-on and off Seville city bus.
The city of Seville bubbles with life but has such high temperatures during summer. The weather burns hot during the summer! But when you lodge at a hotel like Barceló Sevilla Renacimiento, its unique facilities make you forget the scorch outside.
In Sevilla, Hotel Barceló Sevilla Renacimiento is the perfect hotel, I must say the least. With such great facilities and just walking distance to the ISLA MAGICA theme park, it couldn’t be more enjoyable.
The hotel provides a free train ride to the water park every half hour. This way, you can enjoy all the fun without any interruptions. However, ISLA Magica is also a 10-minute walking distance from the hotel. It is also very easy to get tickets to this water park, as ISLA Magica has a sales desk in the reception of Hotel Barcelo Renacimiento.
You can explore this beautiful fun city and read more about my visit to Seville.
ESTEPONA
Just spending a night in Seville, we commenced our journey to Estepona in southern Spain. The drive from Sevilla to Estepona was about 2h30mins. Estepona is a region of Malaga in Costa del Sol. Stretched on the beach is this lovely sunny city.
Lodging & Feeding
We stayed at Cortijo del Mar Resort in Estepona, about an hour from Malaga city center. The resort is made up of fully furnished villas.
It has an amazing outdoor pool and a pool bar to have refreshing drinks.
The resort offers serviced villas and is located in Costa del Sol. For large families, the villas are ideal.
Also nearby, are supermarkets such as Mercadona, ALDI, and Supercor, where you can buy groceries. At the end of the street, you can find some great restaurants. One of them is MASALA, which is an Indian restaurant. Another option for a good breakfast is d’ Alicia cafe.
MÁLAGA
Malaga nestled in Southern Spain offers a delightful mix of rich history, stunning beaches, and vibrant culture.
Driving to Malaga, it was a magnificent city to behold. With tourists and locals, there are many tapas bars and cafés where people can enjoy gelato, tapas, and cerveza. We parked by the beach and with a short walk, got to the beautiful warm Mediterranean sea.
Pablo Picasso, born in Malaga, has a museum dedicated to him that art lovers should visit. It houses a remarkable collection of his works spanning his entire career.
A Stroll Through History
Begin your Malaga adventure by immersing yourself in its rich history. Wander through the winding alleys of the historic center, where Moorish fortresses stand as silent sentinels to bygone eras.
Marvel at the grandeur of the Malaga Cathedral, with its imposing façade and awe-inspiring interiors. Don’t forget to explore the ancient ruins of the Roman Theatre, where echoes of the past still linger. What to visit in Malaga are numerous but you can enjoy these 10 spots I liked visiting!
1. WALK THROUGH THE CITY CENTRE
The city centre of Malaga buzzes with life. With so many antic shops, traditional sweets, and the Piccaso museum, it will be hard to miss out on any fun. Walk around Malaga’s old town to see beautiful buildings like the Cathedral, Alcazaba Fortress, and Roman Theatre. Enjoy the historic charm of the streets. What to visit in Malaga is right at your fingertips to enjoy.
2. ROMAN THEATRE OF MÁLAGA
This location is a sight to behold as it brings to life, the presence of the ancient Roman civilization. It is most enjoyable when you climb the walls to walk in the paths of time. Getting comfortable in walking shoes is required. Malaga is a very clean city too and it was impressive to see how organized it is.
3. THE CATHEDRAL OF MÁLAGA
I think the Cathedral left a lasting memory. This is due to the beauty of this magnificent edifice. The cathedral was still closed to the public due to the post-COVID era. However, beholding the cathedral from the exterior is remarkable. The edifice is breathtaking and its magnificence stands tall, right in the city centre of Málaga. It is a beauty to behold.
4. VICENS ARTISAN TURONS & CHOCOLATES
Any chocolate lover in the house? Yeah, this is the place to visit. With traditional chocolates and turron sweets made with almonds, lemon, coconut, and everything good, you can bet to get confused from the wide variety of sweets. It was also fascinating to get some truffles and honey there. It makes good souvenirs too!
5. PICASSO MUSEUM MÁLAGA
What to visit in Malaga is incomplete without paying homage to its most famous son, Pablo Picasso. Dive into the world of this artistic genius at the Picasso Museum, housed in a beautifully restored 16th-century palace.
You can see a variety of Picasso’s famous artworks here. They range from his early sketches to his iconic pieces. These pieces change the art world. The colors and shapes of his creations transport you to a realm where imagination knows no bounds.
For me, this Picasso museum was the ultimate to cap up the short hours spent in Málaga. As an art lover, I found the expression of the great artist, Pablo Picasso, and his lifeline intriguing.
The museum has two collections, the Pablo Picasso and Paula Rego collections. The museum charged an entrance fee but it was worth it. They provided an audio guide in different languages to explain the meaning of each art piece based on the room number.
At the end of the museum, you could buy souvenirs from the gift shop and it couldn’t be more rewarding.
6. Culinary Delights
No exploration of Malaga would be complete without indulging in its delectable cuisine. Embark on a culinary journey through the city’s tapas bars and restaurants, where every bite is a revelation. Sample traditional delights like fried fish, gazpacho, and succulent espetos de sardinas, grilled to perfection. We had lunch at a beach bar and it was delicious.
Wash it all down with a glass of refreshing sangria or a crisp local wine, and savor the flavors of Andalusia with every mouthful.
You won’t need a Michelin-starred restaurant with a lineup of restaurants offering great food. What to visit in Malaga is enjoying its great gastronomy.
7. Beyond the City Limits
While Malaga has plenty to offer within its borders, don’t miss the opportunity to venture beyond the city limits. Take a day trip to the picturesque village of Mijas, with its whitewashed buildings and panoramic views of the Mediterranean. Explore the glitzy resort town of Marbella, where luxury yachts bob in the harbor and designer boutiques line the streets.
8. Sun, Sand, and Sea
After delving into Malaga’s cultural heritage, it’s time to bask in the glorious Mediterranean sunshine. Head to one of Malaga’s pristine beaches, where golden sands meet crystal-clear waters.
