The Story Behind My Algarve Scenery Cake: A Weekend of Friendship, Memories, and Celebration

Some cakes are more than cake.

They tell a story, capture a moment, and preserve a memory that will be cherished for years to come.

Recently, I had the privilege of creating one of those cakes for a very special occasion: my dear friend Maureen’s 45th birthday celebration in the Algarve.

A friendship that started in kindergarten

Maureen and I go way back. We’ve been friends since kindergarten, sharing milestones, laughter, and life experiences along the way.

Even though life has taken us to different countries, our friendship has remained strong. So when she decided to celebrate her 45th birthday in Portugal—and travelled all the way from the Netherlands for this milestone—I knew it had to be special.

A reunion I didn’t expect (and will never forget)

What made the celebration even more meaningful was an unexpected reunion. Some of my former classmates—people I hadn’t seen since 1998—also attended.

Imagine reconnecting after nearly three decades.
The conversations flowed so easily as we reminisced about school days, caught up on life, and laughed at memories that still felt like yesterday.

Why I chose an Algarve scenery cake design

As a baker and cake artist, I believe every celebration deserves a centerpiece that reflects the moment.

For Maureen’s birthday, I didn’t want to create a “regular” cake. I wanted something that captured:

  • The beauty of the Algarve
  • The joy of the weekend
  • The nostalgia of old friendships
  • The excitement of making new memories

That’s when inspiration struck: I would create an Algarve scenery cake.

How I made the cake using edible wafer paper

Instead of a traditional design, I used edible wafer paper to build a landscape right on the cake.

Wafer paper has quickly become one of my favorite decorating mediums because it lets me turn cakes into edible works of art. The possibilities are endless, and it gives me a way to tell stories through cake design.

For this cake, I recreated the Algarve coastline—golden cliffs, turquoise water, and those breathtaking beaches that make the Algarve one of Portugal’s most beloved destinations.

The final result was simply stunning.

This cake became more than dessert. It became a conversation piece, and a reflection of the scenery that would be the backdrop for an unforgettable weekend.

The Algarve weekend that inspired it all

Our celebration began at Epic Sana Algarve, where we finally got to slow down, catch up, and enjoy the atmosphere.

One of the highlights of the weekend was visiting Nosoloagua in Portimão. The sunshine, the beach, the ocean views, and the laughter shared among friends created the perfect setting for connection. Sometimes the best moments are the simplest ones.

Later, we headed to Albufeira Old Town for dinner. The charming streets and lively energy felt like the perfect place to celebrate such a meaningful milestone.

While the nightlife in Albufeira Old Town doesn’t typically continue until the early hours of the morning, it still stays lively well into the night. The atmosphere is more family-friendly and caters to visitors of all ages. You’ll find charming pubs with large screens showing live sports, happy hour specials, karaoke evenings, live music, and various entertainment events designed to attract the many tourists who visit the area. In contrast, Albufeira’s famous Strip offers a more energetic party scene, often featuring international DJs who don’t usually take to the decks until 1 am or 2 am, keeping the celebrations going into the early hours.

And of course, we couldn’t end the night without experiencing the vibrant energy of the Albufeira Strip.

What this cake reminded me about celebrations

Looking back, the weekend was about so much more than a birthday.

It was about friendship that has stood the test of time.
Reconnecting after nearly thirty years made it even more special.
It was about celebrating life and appreciating the journey that brought us here.

Most importantly, it reminded me why I love creating cakes.

Every cake has the potential to tell a story. Whether it’s a wedding, birthday, anniversary, retirement, or reunion, cakes become part of our most treasured memories. They show up in life’s biggest milestones—and they’re often what people remember long after the celebration ends.

My Algarve scenery cake was created to honour a remarkable friendship and a remarkable woman turning 45. Through edible wafer paper and cake artistry, I was able to turn a Portuguese landscape into a meaningful centerpiece.

And honestly? It was one of the best weekends ever—filled with friendship, laughter, nostalgia, and unforgettable memories.
